Deaconesses

2 Tim 2:15

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

History records the Deaconess Board being organized in 1936 by the late pastor Dr. A. B. Bingham. Members of the board were usually spouses of the Deacons who were also appointed by the Pastor. Deaconesses were active missionaries, prayer bandleaders and church mothers. They prepared the church for communion by dressing the pulpit and alter in white and assisted new female converts in dressing for baptism.

In 1993, our Pastor, Rev. Warren E. Amlet appointed new deaconesses and changed the nomenclature of “board” to “ministry” to depict what we do as members of the body of Christ. Current members of the ministry are First Lady Irene Amlet, Deaconesses Theresa Battle, Regina Cummings Fletcher, Geraldine Dillard, Mildred Green, Gladys Hill, Barbara Jean Hyman, Willie M. Lovett, and Sylvia Weston. The ministry continues the work established by our sisters in the early days. Our goal is to be engaged boldly in worship, prayer and support of ministering and work. We will unify our visiting of the sick and shut-ins, develop a mother to mother one on one mentoring ministry for young single mothers, focus more on the needs of our youth and seniors, and give more support to other ministries.

We have accomplished many of our goals this past year and we pray that our success continues. Our victories include, honoring our seniors at Christmas with gifts, providing gifts for the youth department’s Angel tree, ministering to the family of our fallen sister, keeping new members on schedule for training classes and baptism dates. We visited our sick and shut-ins and supported our pastor whenever he called upon us.
